BILL ANDERSONMy first 'exposure' to photography occured while working as a labtechnician at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow, Scotland in the mid 60's. One of the many facilitieswithin the lab was a darkroom where one was encouraged to learn how to develop film and printphotographs.Soon I was processing a series of black and white photographs, whichI took in and around the Glasgow Cathedral. Although I enjoyed this immensely, a few months laterI was boarding a plane for Canada, getting married , raising a family and pursuing other interestsIt was not until the late 90's that retirement reopened the door tophotography when my wife bought me a 2 mega pixel, digital camera. Three years later I felt theneed to be further challenged beyond 'point and shoot' so I advanced to a Canon DSLR Rebel andjoined the Surrey Photography Club. Now who would ever guess that the fellow who sings so grandly in the choir and loves to exercise his green thumb in our church gardens had a career in the secret world of wiretaps? That indeed was what Bill Anderson did as an intelligence analyst with the Edmonton Integrated Intelligence Unit. As a member of the Edmonton Police Service for 31 years, he worked in conjunction with the RCMP on several projects. Although Bill chose not to discuss the details of his work, he covered it with the general statement that “we chased gangs of drug dealers of different ethnic origins using translators together with a variety of wiretap methods and covert surveillance tactics,” and he was often called as an expert witness in cases in Canada and the U.S. He won’t say how many criminals he helped to catch with his wiretap evidence, but he noted that it was a rewarding time and gave his career a rating of 110%. How’s that for job satisfaction?

One of the reasons Bill was sought after as a wire tap specialist and translator was his fluency in Spanish. He spent his first sixteen years in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Cali, Colombia where his schooling was conducted in Spanish. Although Bill was born in Manchester, England (which he points out is the home of the famous Coronation Street – a program he enjoys watching), his father’s profession as a chemical engineer took the family to South America where Bill’s brother and sister were born. As Bill points out, he was the only gringo kid in the family. He likened the British and American schools he attended to a mixture of the United Nations with many British, German, and French children attending with the local children.

When asked about sports in school, Bill replied, “Well, I can tell you that none of us owned skates!” Perhaps this was the reason that Bill’s mother decided to take the children to her hometown of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to experience a Canadian winter. On his first trip to the outdoor skating rink, 7 year-old Bill was delighted to throw snowballs on the newly-cleared surface and couldn’t understand why the other kids were objecting.

When Bill was sixteen, the family moved to Glasgow which proved to be a major culture shock for him. Although he grew to love Glasgow, his first view of the city laden with heavy industrial pollution was disappointing. He points out that Glasgow has changed for the better with regard to pollution problems and he thinks it’s a beautiful city. One of the highlights during his time in Scotland was landing a summer job in a fish factory on an island off the coast of Iceland. It was quite a different adventure for a young man from South America.

When Bill completed his schooling, he moved to Edmonton in 1971 where he began his rewarding career with the Edmonton Police Service. On his retirement in 2002 he and his wife Meg moved first to Victoria and then to South Surrey to be nearer to their granddaughter. Bill has been married to Meg for eighteen years, and has one daughter, two stepsons and five grandchildren. In his five years here, Bill has filled his time with many activities. His membership in the Kent Street Choristers brought with it a persuasive invitation from some church members to check out First’s Chancel Choir. This serendipitous invitation led to Bill taking on a host of volunteer duties at First United. He is also a volunteer at the Seniors Come Share Society and a member of the Surrey Photography Club. He often can be found taking photos at church events and he has been known to perform some Photoshop magic!

Bill is an avid reader with a particular enjoyment of mysteries, which seems fitting for a former intelligence analyst. John Grisham is his favorite writer, “Grisham’s writing and my brain just seem to go hand in hand.” Bill has also been reading his way through his collection of Mark Twain’s books. Bill does seem to be a Tom Sawyer kind of guy, doesn’t he, but just watch him if he ever volunteers to paint the church fence!

Leo Dery

Leo Dery was born on the 16 November 1915 in the Quebec City. At the age of twelve he was given a 120 box camera and some film developing equipment. This gift sparked his lifelong passion for photography.

In 1932 at the age of 17 he joined CNR where over the next eight years held several
positions. In 1940 he enlisted in the RCAF as an aerial and ground photographer serving in a wide range of photographic related tasks on both the east and west coasts until he
was discharged in Vancouver at the end of the war.

He then returned to Quebec City where he opened his first Photo Studio. He served as a
member and leader in a wide variety of organizations, including “Le Club des Photographes Artisans du Quebec, the Kiwanis Club, the Quebec YMCA, the Protestant School Board of Quebec. In the world of photography Leo was a much sought after lecturer and judge and as well as participating in numerous public exhibitions of his portfolio.

From 1961 to 1969 he was employed by G.A.F. Canada as their representative for the Northern part of Quebec. Then in 1970 he moved to Vancouver and was hired by UBC to head the Photography Section of the Mechanical Engineering Dept., and worked in that capacity until his retirement in 1980 at the age of 65.

Leo’s involvement and contributions to both amateur and professional photography on the lower mainland were numerous and extensive. Just to name a few, his serving as President of the Lions Gate Camera Club, his involvement in the development of the Delta Photo Guild and his contributions to the National Association of Photographic Art, the Western Photographic Circle of Vancouver, and the British Columbia International Exhibition of Photography.

During his final years Leo regularly attended both the Newton Senior Centre and the Surrey Photography Club. In the fall of 2009 he exhibited his prints at the Surrey Photography Club’s “Expo” where his images of the Granville Street celebrations at the end of WWII were an overwhelming hit.

Wherever Leo went he always brought along his wonderful sense of humour, and his passion and enthusiasm for life and photography.

Leo passed away on the 21 of February 2011.

Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

His name is Tim. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it,
jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire
four years of college.

He is brilliant. Kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a
Christian while attending college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative
church. They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not
sure how to go about it..

One day Tim decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his
T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Tim
starts down the aisle looking for a seat.

The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat.
By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable,
but no one says anything.

Tim gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he
realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet.

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick.

About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the
church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Tim.

Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a
three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very
courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy,
everyone is saying to themselves that you can't blame him for what he's going to do.

How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor?

It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy.

The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's cane.
All eyes are focused on him. You can't even hear anyone breathing.
The minister can't even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do.

And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With
great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Tim and
worships with him so he won't be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion...

When the minister gains control, he says,
'What I'm about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget.'

'Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read!'

Our four children first appeared in a six-year span. No wonder their parents found themselves happily crazed with the hullabaloo a house full of little ones entailed. Yet those same parents never gave thought to the possibility their children would depart at the identical mach-speed in which they'd arrived.

College applications, scholarship forms, senior years, baccalaureate services, graduation ceremonies, bag-packings, and leave-takings crowded both the calendar and our emotions. Each of our children -- with unique personalities, plans, and dreams -- vied for our time and attention.

But the one who concerned us the most was Katrina.

Second in seniority, our dominantly right-brained daughter was sweet, bright, and intuitive. She was focused. She was creative. She was artistic. In fact, her talent for painting and drawing evidenced itself at an early age and she shared it generously. Home, church, school, family, friends... extra-curricular activities. Katrina found many opportunities to tap into her flair for the imaginative. We delighted in her developing skills and successes.

What Katrina wasn't, however, was punctual.

Time -- or rather being on time -- didn't matter a whit to this more global-thinking girl of ours. And it affected the entire family. In fact, we all chanted the same refrain: "Katrina, you're making us late!"

No matter what the family outing, or its rank of importance, Katrina kept us from arriving in a timely manner. Especially Sunday morning church services.

"I'm going to warm up the car," her dad would holler up the stairs.

"We're getting our coats on," her brothers and sister advised.

"It's 8:55, past time to leave," I announced, the toe of my shoe tapping an impatient tattoo on the entryway tile.

With her long wet tresses saronged in a towel, Katrina appeared at the top of the stairs. Fresh from the shower. Wrapped in her bathrobe.

"What's the rush?" she asked. "Church doesn't start for five more minutes."

We groaned in dismay. And, as parents, we certainly wondered how Katrina would cope at college where she would have to rely on her alarm clock and the good graces of her roommates. When we waved goodbye to the forlorn figure silhouetted against the bleak college skyline, my breath caught in consternation.

Even so, those of us left at home heaved a collective -- and not so imperceptible -- sigh of relief. No longer must we all traipse to the front for the only pew seats available. Nor would we be shushed by a concert usher as we stumbled to our dark seats during the second cantata. Or slip into a wedding reception just in time to catch the garter. From now on, we would always be on time, we vowed to each other.

As it turned out, dorm living wasn't a simple or easy adjustment for Katrina. Homesick, dealing with "impossible" roommates, our teary daughter called one Sunday morning, a mere two weeks into the semester.

I listened... and soothed... and counseled as she hiccupped her fears and sniffled her concerns into the phone. But the rest of the family wasn't as empathetic.

"I can't believe it," her dad shook his head woefully and heaved a huge sigh. "She's a thousand miles from home," he pointed to the kitchen clock, "and still making us late to church!"

Real servants pay attention to needs. Servants are always on the lookout for ways to help others. When they see a need, they seize the moment to meet it, just as the Bible commands us: "Whenever we have the opportunity, we have to do what is good for everyone, especially for the family of believers" (Galatians 6:10 GWT).
When God puts someone in need right in front of you, he is giving you the opportunity to grow in servanthood. Notice that God says the needs of your church family are to be given preference, not put at the bottom of your "things to do" list.
We miss many occasions for serving because we lack sensitivity and spontaneity. Great opportunities to serve never last long. They pass quickly, sometimes never to return again. You may only get one chance to serve that person, so take advantage of the moment.
"Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now" (Proverbs 3:28 TEV).
John Wesley was an incredible servant of God. His motto was:
"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can."
That is greatness. You can begin by looking for small tasks that no one else wants to do. Do these little things as if they were great things, because God is watching.

"Jesus, however, measured greatness in terms of service, not status. God determines your greatness by how many people you serve, not how many people serve you. "

The world defines greatness in terms of power, possessions, prestige, and position. If you can demand service from others, you've arrived. In our self-serving culture with its me-first mentality, acting like a servant is not a popular concept.

This is so contrary to the world's idea of greatness that we have a hard time understanding it, much less practicing it. The disciples argued about who deserved the most prominent position, and 2,000 years later, Christian leaders still jockey for position and prominence in churches, denominations, and parachurch ministries.

Thousands of books have been written on leadership, but few on servanthood. Everyone wants to lead; no one wants to be a servant. We would rather be generals than privates. Even Christians want to be "servant-leaders," not just plain servants. But to be like Jesus is to be a servant. That's what he called himself.

While knowing your shape is important for serving God, having the heart of a servant is even more important. Remember, God shaped you for service, not for self-centeredness. Without a servant's heart, you will be tempted to misuse your shape for personal gain. You will also be tempted to use it as an excuse to exempt yourself from meeting some needs.

God often tests our hearts by asking us to serve in ways we're not shaped. If you see a man fall into a ditch, God expects you to help him out, not say, "I don't have the gift of mercy or service."

While you may not be gifted a particular task, you may be called to do it if no one who is gifted at it is around. Your primary ministry should be in the area of your shape, but your secondary service is wherever you're needed at the moment.

Your shape reveals your ministry, but your servant's heart will reveal your maturity. No special talent or gift is required to stay after a meeting to pick up trash or stack chairs. Anyone can be a servant. All it requires is character.

It is possible to serve in church for a lifetime without ever being a servant. You must have a servant's heart.

How can you know if you have the heart of a servant?

Jesus said, "You can tell what they are by what they do" (Matthew 7:16 CEV).

Rania tooks these pictures. I was surprised to see that my Grandfather was buried in the same cemetery as Grandma and Aunt Gladys, as I was always given to understand that he went to a hospital in North Battleford where he eventually passed away. Thanks Rania for the wonderful memories.
